TOMS Betty (nee Aylmore)

Betty was born on the 18th of May 1931 at Gnowangerup, her parents were Herbert James and Dorris Elizabeth (nee Venning) Aylmore.
Betty was educated at the Gnowangerup School till her Junior year which she spent in Katanning where she boarded with her Uncle Bert Venning, a teacher and his wife Honor (nee Aylmore).
Betty became a telephonist at the Gnowangerup Exchange and rode to and from work on her bicycle. As the morning shift was 7 a.m. and the evening shift did not finish till 10 p.m. there were many cold, wet rides on a gravel road to home, a mile from town.
On the 28th of March 1953 Betty married Lennox Edward Toms at the Methodist Church where her parents had also married
Betty and Len had two children, Peter Lennox and Kerry Noreen

Her interests included Camera Club, Model Aero Club and Jaycettes, later working at the Bakery, Eric Richards & Co and finally the Gnowangerup Co-op.
When Len developed a severe allergy to grain dust they moved to Katanning to begin a business, but Len later moved back to his trade of mechanics. Betty worked at the Katanning Co-op till she retired.
Always artistic, Betty excelled in china painting until an allergy saw her shift to painting water colours at which she became very successful….she also enjoyed cake decorating until arthritis forced a close to all fine work.
In 2009 when this was written, Betty was still gardening and sharing Len’s interest in miniature steam railways.

June also shared an amusing insight into Len’s childhood:
“The Toms family (Pat was a Timms) lived at Telyarup when Len and his sister Mary were young. Mary was always thinking up pranks and getting young brother into awful trouble carrying them out - like throwing eggs all over the harness and saddlery because Mary dared Len to do so!”
